Anti-drug trafficking cops nab 30 in nightclub raid

Siem Reap: Siem Reap provincial anti-drug trafficking police on Sunday arrested 30 people during a raid at a nightclub in Siem Reap city.

Brigadier General Oum Mara, provincial anti-drug trafficking department chief, yesterday said that police raided the SC Club in Slor Kram commune and arrested the suspects red-handed while they were smoking drugs inside.

He said those arrested included the club’s owner, its general manager, DJ and a cook.

Brig Gen Oum Mara said the 30 were arrested at about 2am on Sunday when his officers, led by the provincial deputy court prosecutor, raided the club in Thlouk Andong village after a month-long investigation.

He said the suspects were drug users and distributors.

Brig Gen Mara said that police had kept surveillance on the club for a month and observed people often entering it in order to smoke drugs.

“They were arrested red-handed by our police while they were smoking drugs inside the club,” he said. “After their arrests, police seized 21 small packages of crystal methamphetamine, nine ecstasy pills and drug paraphernalia from them.”

Brig Gen Mara noted that all 30 suspects tested positive for drug use.

He said that the owner, general manager, DJ and cook are accused of drug use and facilitating the use of drugs, while the rest are accused of drug use and trafficking.

Brig Gen Mara added that the suspects are for detained questioning and will be sent to court today.

Deputy prosecutor Theng Samnang, who led the raid, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
